At Snow Family Dentistry, we take great pride in creating a patient experience that is comfortable, reassuring, even relaxing. We do this through our “relaxation room,” our comfort menu, and the welcoming environment we aim for throughout the practice.

Another way in which we provide a comfortable experience for patients is by offering a range of sedation options. We understand that, for patients of any age, a trip to the dentist may cause some anxiety; we offer sedation options to take the edge off. Additionally, we want to minimize any pain and discomfort our patients feel, which sometimes means using different numbing agents.

If you have any questions about our use of sedation at Snow Family Dentistry, we welcome you to reach out to us directly. Call our Mesa, AZ office at any time.

Sedation Options

There are two primary sedation options that we provide at Snow Family dentistry.

Nitrous Gas

A nitrous option is a perfect option for easing the jitters of anxious or trepidatious adults. It is also a sedation method that is well-suited for children, as it is painless and non-threatening.

Local Anesthetics

For certain oral procedures, we use injectable local anesthesia to numb the treatment area and ensure the patient does not feel any pain.

Oral Conscious Sedation

We also offer oral conscious sedation, which is taken in pill form. This sedative gives the patient a feeling of deep relaxation, so after treatment, you may feel drowsy and be unable to recall your procedure. Since oral sedation doesn’t wear off as quickly as laughing gas, you’ll need to arrange a ride home after your visit

Is Sedation Dentistry Right for You?

At Snow Family Dentistry, we are happy to discuss sedation options with any of our patients at any time; it is important to us that you always feel completely at-ease here in our office. In particular, we are likely to recommend sedation for patients who fall into the following categories.

Low Pain Threshold

For patients who tend to feel pain more intensely or who are more sensitive about discomfort in the mouth, sedation may be a prudent option.

Difficulty Sitting Still

For children or adolescents who struggle to sit still in the dentist’s chair, sedation can be a good way to ensure the treatment is carried out as quickly and smoothly as possible.

Tooth Sensitivity

Some patients have sensitive teeth, meaning that any pressure at all may result in pain. Sedation can be used to ease discomfort.

Bad Gag Reflex

Some patients cannot help but gag any time there is a probe or dental instrument placed in their mouth. Sedation can make the appointment go more smoothly.

Significant Dental Needs

For any patient who needs a lot of dental work done or requires a particularly disruptive procedure, sedation can be a necessity.

Is Sedation Safe for Children?

Sedation is often the best way to help young patients get through their treatment. We understand that parents may have questions about the type of sedation being used and about potential risks. For most young patients, we use nitrous gas (“laughing gas”), a very common and safe sedation method. We are happy to address any questions or concerns during your appointment.
